Expectation from Paticipants

Before the commencement of the training, the participants were asked to state their expectations from the training. The expectations of the participants served as a guide to the facilitator and enabled her to deliver the training in a manner that focuses on the real needs and aspirations of the participants.  The following are some of the expectations expressed by the participants:

  • To be able to have a broader knowledge on ICT
  • To discover new programme packages and how to use them without difficulties
  • To be able to share information obtained from the training with their peers and younger ones
  • To network with other girls and experts in Aba and other parts Abia state to make the state ICT compliant for women
  • To be informed about the various opportunities in ICT and how they can be adapted to various professions
  • To know how to communicate and share vital information to a lot of people
  • To become a tech expert
  • To learn about the various areas on ICT and to be computer literate
  • To be able to become and ICT practitioner in Abia State
  • Be acquainted with ICT solutions to various problems in my community
  • To become mentally fit and superior as a woman
  • To have an idea that will enable me have a start-up that will make me stand out in the society
  • To be able make use of the internet and solve some network related issues
  • To know everything about computers and the opportunities around it
  • To find out the job opportunities associated with ICT
  • To acquire skills which will help me earn a living and also build the capacity of others
  • To be self-dependent as a young lady
  • To establish a computer centre or a tech village
  • To know the names of successful women in ICT and to look up to them as my role models
  • To maximise my time and skills in digital marketing and advertising
  • To fully embrace the advantages and importance of technology and also be open to new dimensions and innovations
  • To be able to adapt ICT solution to community development

At the end of the training, the participants affirmed that their expectations were met during the delivery of the modules.

Training approach and Modules

The training adopted a participatory and practical approach using online Google resources and trainers.  The methodology included a mix of presentations, practical surfing of the Web, discussions, questions/answer sessions, and suggestions/decisions for further action. Inclusive processes encouraged beneficiaries to freely get involved in discussions, role-play and game aspects of the training. An experienced Google trainer facilitated the training for young girls in Abia state. The presentations included a mix of PowerPoint slides, videos, and an interactive knowledge testing question. The modules were presented in a participatory manner and participants were asked to describe how each module fits into the realities of communities in Abia State. Also, participants were given ample time to ask questions, raise concerns or make contributions.

facilitatorThe practical approach of the training enabled the participants to have a first-hand experience on the various uses of ICT. They were encouraged to use their android phones and other internet enabled devices to carry out the practical exercises in the training modules. This approach encapsulated the interest of the young girls and made them to be focused throughout the training.  To engender the spirit of teamwork, the girls were encouraged to work in groups. Also, those without internet enabled device were encouraged to use the phone or device of their peers to do the practical sessions.

The training commenced with presentations on “What Google Digital Skills is all about” using problem solving principle which was linked to use of the internet in businesses. Participants were required to register with the Grow with Google online training portal. This enabled participants to finish the various modules and immediately get certified by Google. Participants were provided with access to electricity and internet at the Rad5 Google training centre.
