Background

This intervention is to strengthen the mechanisms to manage conflict in Sagbama local government area. This is through building/ creating (where not in existence) the capacity of existing LG and community level mechanisms, institutions and processes to support conflict prevention and transformation in targeted local government areas of Bayelsa State

Objective

Purpose of the Bayelsa Conflict Prevention and Peace Building Project is to increase the capabilities of the conflict prevention mechanisms to be able to identify early warning signals to prevent the occurrence of conflict in Sagbama LGA, Bayelsa State, at the same time mitigating on the negative impact of such violent conflicts on lives and property

 

Outcomes:

  • Increased understanding and display graphically within the communities the connections and interactions among conflict factors and actors incomprehending its root causes and nurturing its possible reduction, management or solution.
  • The emergence of skilled and effectivecommunity based conflict trackers with an integrated enhanced capacity building process to be able to track and collate conflicts at the community level and feed into the Bayelsa Conflict Watch Centre.
  • Sustained facilitation and support institutions for promoting peaceful coexistence and ensure grassroots awareness on conflicts transformation and healing processes
  • Establishment of Cross boarder peace initiatives in Sagbama Local Government Area
  • Built Sagbama architecture of peace by pulling together different stakeholders in the LGA for peace building
  • Enhanced social bonding among different community through the activities of the SLGTA
  • Increase the preventive mechanism for conflict in Sagbama local Government Area; Early warning and respond mechanism improved in Sagbama local government Area
  • Increased participation of women in peace building- Conflict prevention.
  • This project thereby specifically takes into consideration the National Action Plan for the Implementation of UNSCR 1325 and Related Resolutions in Nigeria Recommended Activities “stakeholder contributions Committee”
  • Reinforce and support women’s formal and informal conflict prevention on efforts
  • Creation of three platforms Sagbama Local Government Conflict transformation Alliance, Community Coping Mechanism and the Mothers for peace with the aim to prevent conflict using the early warning signal.
